Question: What types of wood do you work with?
Answer: We offer custom crafting in a wide variety of select woods, including eastern white pine, oak, maple, cherry, alder and mahogany (and even stained glass and metal details!).
Question: What are your construction methods?
Answer: All our crafted furniture is made of solid wood including insides and backs of drawers and chests. Using traditional methods of construction often takes more time but the final result makes the effort worthwhile.
Our prices cater to every budget. Our quality caters only to perfectionists.
Question: Do you ever use Plywood? What about Particle board?
Answer: All good cabinetmakers and woodworkers use furniture grade plywood when constructing larger pieces of cabinetry. Not to be mistaken for inexpensive C grade plywood often used in construction, furniture grade plywood is expensive, faced with select furniture grade wood, and has more dimensional stability than solid wood. It's use keeps cabinetry strong and stable. Particle board is NOT used in fine furniture making.
Question: Where is your shop? Do you have a retail space?
Answer: We are located in Victoria, BC. It is a beautiful city located in Western Canada. Because we are custom builders, we don't have a retail space. However we do have a studio, available by appointment only, where one of our designers will be happy to show you some examples of our work. For our local clients, we usually work on an outcall basis, traveling to the clients location with our portfolio. Our designer assesses the color of your walls, the location of your room's heat and light sources, and acquires information about the way you live including future plans for your lifestyle. All this to ensure the perfect fit for that special piece of furniture Blue Bridge builds for you. We also do a significant amount of work for out of town clients via e-mail.
Question: Are you expensive?
Answer: Custom made furniture tends to be somewhat more expensive than mass produced furniture, due to the individual nature of the process. Our primary emphasis is on quality construction and style. We have always believed that good quality things are worth what you pay for them. That being said, I have found that our prices are competitive with those of pieces found in higher-end furniture and department stores.
Question: What sort of styles do you design in?
Answer: Originally, we crafted primarily Country, Shaker, and Canadiana styles of furniture, mostly in Reclaimed fir or Eastern White Pine. Over the last several years however, we have been designing pieces in the Victorian, Contemporary, Arts and Crafts, and Prairie Styles, in a variety of fine woods. I also enjoy incorporating stain glass and wrought iron into my designs. Like music, each furniture style creates it's own mood, and is appropriate for it's own situation. It has been a pleasure to design such a wide variety of pieces, and to make so many clients happy.
Question: How long does it take to get something made?
Answer: It varies. We remain busy throughout the year, but Spring and Fall tend to be our busiest seasons. Although smaller pieces can often be fit into the schedule, typically, there's about a 2-3 month wait for any significant piece of furniture. Good things come to those who wait! Check with us to enquire about our current schedule.
If you have any questions, please feel free to e-mail us, and we'll try to answer them as quickly as we can.
